CHAPTER NINE

“Do you have time to chat now?” Nat asked.

She was standing on the porch with a bottle of wine and a box of Charlotte’s favorite cookies. The weather had cooled dramatically, and it looked like a storm was brewing.

“I always have time for you. Come on in,” Charlotte said, opening the door wider. “Is something wrong?”

“No,” Nat said, with a shrug. “I realized that the last time you came to me, I spent most of the time whining about my problems.”

“You know I don’t see it as whining. Come on in. Isla made pasta for dinner before she left.”

“Does she have space to take on another client?” Nat asked as they walked into the kitchen. “I could use someone like Isla in my life.”

“I don’t know if Isla has space for me anymore,” Charlotte said with a grimace.

The kitchen was the heart of the house. It was one of the largest spaces in the house and had been renovated several times over the years. When Charlotte was a kid, they’d spend every holiday at the house, and the kitchen was always full of people and cooking food. As a result, it was one of Charlotte’s favorite places in the world.

It was a homey room with mahogany cabinets and granite countertops. While it was a little old-fashioned, Charlotte had no plans to change it. The kitchen reminded her too much of her grandmother.

There was a breakfast nook in one corner with a stained-glass window that depicted a rose garden. Nat headed over to the breakfast nook and dropped onto a chair with a sigh as she put the wine down on the table.

“What? Has she said anything?” Nat asked in confusion. “I always thought that Isla loved working here.”

“Me too. I guess maybe she just loved working for my grandmother. I heard her talking to someone when I first got here. She mentioned that she wasn’t sure how to tell me something. She hasn’t told me what it is yet, and I get the feeling that she’s avoiding me.”

Nat frowned and leaned back in her chair. “You’re reading too much into this.”

“Do you think so?” Charlotte asked as she put the pasta in the microwave.

“Yes, you don’t know what she wants to tell you, so you assumed that it was bad. Sometimes a gut feeling comes in handy when you’re working on something like the Ivy Stanhope case. Other times, it just gets in the way. You know, I once tried to plan a surprise party for Brandon. He accused me of cheating on him.”

“I remember that,” Charlotte said with a grimace. “He was so paranoid that he accused you right before you told him about the party. We were all hiding in the kitchen, and we heard everything.”

The microwave dinged.

Nat shook her head in annoyance. “He never did apologize for that. And yet I’m the emotionless robot who wrecked our marriage.”

Charlotte didn’t say anything as she took the pasta out of the microwave and began dishing up.

“Speaking of the Ivy Stanhope case, have you made any progress?” Nat asked, getting some wine glasses.
